The Portland Trail Blazers recently re-signed Allen Crabbe to a four-year deal worth around $74 million. Here is why this move was a good one by the Blazers.
The NBA salary cap skyrocketed this offseason and now everyone seems to be getting paid. With the types of contracts being handed out, a guy earning less than $10 million a year seems like a great deal no matter how many years are on the deal.
That also left a scary situation for many teams with restricted free agents on their team. If the player did not sign early contract extensions, the team ran the risk of letting him get a big offer sheet in free agency.
We saw that happen to a number of players such as Tyler Johnson and Allen Crabbe, both of whom were signed to offer sheets by the Brooklyn Nets. Both the Miami Heat and the Portland Trail Blazers decided to match those deals, bringing back Johnson to Miami and Crabbe to Portland respectively.
Both of the contracts were good deals, especially with Portland bringing back Crabbe. Although his cap hit is going to be a lot bigger than it was last year, Crabbe’s deal can help Portland later down the road. Here are five reasons why the signing works.
