The 2016 NBA offseason will be unlike anything the basketball world has ever seen before. With the salary cap jumping to a projected $94 million and contenders assembling left and right, there will be plenty of reasons for NBA fans to be excited when free agency tips off on July 1.

Unfortunately for Phoenix Suns fans, their team won’t be the cause of much excitement this summer. Despite possessing plenty of cap space and a motivated general manager in Ryan McDonough, the Suns seem to have finally accepted that their path back to prominence may take a bit longer than expected.

More from Phoenix Suns

While this sounds like a horrible description for a once proud franchise, a departure from the “build from the middle up” strategy would be a welcome one. After nailing the 2016 NBA Draft with a few upside picks, it appears the Suns are finally gearing toward a full-scale rebuild centered around Devin Booker, Dragan Bender and Marquese Chriss.

But even with all that young talent, it’ll take awhile for them to elevate the Suns back to relevance in the West, especially since Phoenix likely won’t be scoring any meetings with high profile free agents this summer.

As free agency expectations are lowered and the franchise looks to reinvent its identity to reflect its promising young players, however, what can be expected in this summer’s free agency?

McDonough has to spend the team’s cap space somewhere, and there are still useful veterans, former fan favorites and young, high upside players worth overpaying for. Here’s a look at five free agency targets for the Phoenix Suns, including a few honorable mentions.
