With reports that his time with the Chicago Bulls has seemingly come to a close, Joakim Noah enters free agency with plenty of questions surrounding him.   Will those potential red flags be enough to affect his value this summer?

The NBA season may officially be over for all teams, but the work for next season has already begun.

While our eyes are set on this year’s draft, this year’s free agency has the potential to be one of the more unpredictable free agency periods in quite some time.

All throughout the season, we’ve heard about the kind of things that could be in store this summer, due to the rising salary cap as well as the quality of this year’s free agency class.

Now that the start of free agency is a little more than a week away, we’re starting to get a taste of the type of craziness that lies ahead.

Although it’s easy to focus on the stars who will be unrestricted free agents this offseason like Kevin Durant and LeBron James, this year’s free agency is filled with plenty of players who have perplexing free agent cases under the new exploding salary cap.

Of the players that fall under that category, it’s arguable that Joakim Noah‘s free agency may be the most mystifying to watch this summer.

An MVP candidate just two seasons ago, the last two years have been quite strange for the 31 year-old product out of Florida.

Noah’s production over the last two seasons had been a far cry of what he had been able to produce in his prime, due to the long list of injuries he’s accrued over his career as well as the Chicago Bulls‘ addition of Pau Gasol.

While Noah’s diminished production did little to change his role under former Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau in the 2014-15 season, his role drastically changed before the year began under current head coach Fred Hoiberg.

Noah started the season coming off the bench (which was not his suggestion, according to Noah) and any chance of him regaining his form quickly disappeared as he struggled to find a rhythm under his new role before his season was cut short due to injury.

That’s all set the stage for this summer where Noah’s future in Chicago is very up in the air, considering his role with the team along with their general outlook.

Whether Noah’s time in Chicago is over or not, what remains as the big question regarding him this offseason is worth around the league.

Of course, the primary reason for that is due to the growing salary cap that’s on the way this coming summer.

However, with his injury history and two seasons worth of evidence suggesting that he’s past his peak, will teams value Noah as a starter this summer?

It’s obviously hard to say at this point and the difference between “starters” money compared to the value of a role player won’t be as drastic as it once was, again due to the rising cap.

That isn’t to say Noah can’t recapture some of his old glory with either the Bulls or in a new environment in a more veteran-type role.

Obviously a lot has to be done on Noah’s part in order for that to happen, which includes recovering from the shoulder surgery he underwent to repair his dislocated left shoulder.

However, Noah’s overall injury history is a major red flag that won’t be overlooked and it could be what defines the type of offers he gets this summer.

Where Noah ends up this offseason remains to be seen, but it’s not hard to envision a team taking a flyer on him in hopes he can turn his career around.

With that said, there’s plenty that Noah will have to prove in hopes that he can secure a very lucrative offer this offseason.
