With Space Jam 2 reportedly on the way, which NBA superstars should be featured as Monstars in a game against LeBron James and the Looney Tunes?

The dreams of NBA fans and nightmares of 90s children everywhere appear to be close at hand. After Michael Jordan and the cast of the Looney Tunes battled an alien race from Moron Mountain for their freedom by overcoming Monstars who had stolen the talents of NBA players in Space Jam back in 1996, the landscape of basketball/cartoon movies would never be the same.

Though adults and critics were less than thrilled with the quality of the movie itself, the mashup between the greatest basketball player ever, beloved cartoon characters and Billy Murray left children everywhere entertained. The movie is something of a cult classic among young adults who grew up in the 90s and early 2000s, and it was a box office success as well.

It’s no surprise, then, to hear that nearly 20 years later, a sequel could finally be in the works.

Space Jam 2 is not a new idea. During Kobe Bryant‘s golden years, Lakers fans everywhere were clamoring for a sequel, declaring the Black Mamba as the only worthy successor to MJ if a new Space Jam were ever to be made. But with LeBron James‘ rise over the last decade, a new challenger has emerged, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, the sequel is getting green lit.

According to the report, James will star in the sequel, though according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, no deal is officially in place yet.

At this point, it seems like it’s only a matter of time before the news is official. The question is, which NBA players should be featured in the sequel as the victims of the Moron Mountain aliens who need professional talent to become Monstars once again?

More from NBA

In the original, five aliens — Nawt, Bupkus, Pound, Bang and Blanko — stole the talents of Mugsy Bogues, Larry Johnson, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing and Shawn Bradley to try and beat the Looney Tunes who recruited Michael Jordan in the middle of a golf round with Larry Bird and Bill Murray.

The return of franchise staples like Lola Bunny, Bill Murray and even Larry Bird feels like a must at this point. A Kobe Bryant appearance would be fantastic (maybe he could feel Bird’s role as ultra-harsh skeptic this time around?), Michael Jordan should at least get a cameo, and it seems inevitable before Kevin Hart is involved somehow — perhaps as the bumbling Stan Podolak of this movie.

But as far as the actual NBA actors who will help round out the cast and get their talent stolen, who would be the best fits from a basketball and personality standpoint? Here’s a look at the current players at each position who should be strongly considered as LeBron James’ Monstar opposition in Space Jam 2.
