Celtics add Thomas, deal Prince to Detroit
The Boston Celtics climbed into the fray during the final frenetic minutes before Thursday trade deadline, acquiring guard Isaiah Thomas from the Phoenix Suns and sending forward Tayshaun Prince back to the Detroit Pistons, where he was a member of their 2004 NBA title team.
Thomas comes in exchange for Marcus Thornton and the Cleveland Cavaliers’ 2016 first-round pick, per ESPN.com.
For Prince, Detroit will send Jonas Jerebko and Luigi Datome to Boston.
Thomas signed with the Suns over the summer as a restricted free agent and was averaging 15.2 points, 3.7 assists, 2.4 rebounds and a steal in 25.7 minutes off the bench, shooting .426/.391/.872.
Thornton came to Boston over the summer from Brooklyn in the same deal in which the Celtics got Tyler Zeller from Cleveland.
He is averaging 8.9 points and 1.9 rebounds in 16.4 minutes a game in 39 appearances this season.
Prince was acquired from the Memphis Grizzlies last month in the trade that sent Jeff Green to Memphis. In nine games with the C’s, Prince averaged 8.4 points, 3.3 rebounds and two assists and for the season he is shooting a ridiculous 48.8 percent from 3-point range. That comes on the heels of a career-low 29 percent mark last season with the Grizz.
There had been talk that the Celtics would look to buy out Prince, but instead picked up Jerebko and Datome.
Jerebko was playing 15.3 minutes a game in Detroit and averaging 5.2 points and 3.1 boards. Datome has played in only three games this season. He was signed in the summer of 2013 to provide outside shooting, but he has made just 18.6 percent of his 3-point attempts since coming to the NBA.
