New York Knicks star forward Carmelo Anthony’s status is in doubt moving forward with back spasms.

The New York Knicks have been a major disappointment so far this season under Derek Fisher in his first season as an NBA head coach, and Carmelo Anthony hasn’t even played to the level that they have needed him to. He hasn’t been as aggressive offensively, and he hasn’t taken as much of a leadership role either.

Unfortunately for both the Knicks and Anthony, his status moving forward is very much in doubt due to the back spasms that showed themselves against the Houston Rockets.

Anthony left the game late in the first half last night against the Rockets, and didn’t return. Back spasms are not something to take lightly, and they have been known to stick around for a long period of time. Hopefully for the Knicks, that will not be the case with Anthony and he will be able to get back out onto the court in the near future.

Take a look at Anthony’s numbers so far this season for the Knicks:

At this point in time, Anthony is expected to fly with the Knicks to Dallas but his status is uncertain for Wednesday’s game against the Mavericks. Obviously the Knicks are holding out hope that he’ll be able to get onto the court and play, but it may not end up happening. Injury issues are the last thing that New York needs this season, especially when the injured player is their star.

Needless to say, there is a lot of concern moving forward for both Anthony and the Knicks. Back problems are usually a hard thing for athletes to get over and stay completely healthy. All that New York can do is give Anthony time and let him heal completely before they put him back out on the court.

New York desperately needs their star player to get back on the court, and this could very well be something that starts an even worse downward spiral. Losing Anthony for any type of time throughout the season will hurt in a big way, and back spasms are something that will keep coming back unless he’s able to full heal and stay away from the game to do that.

More from Hoops Habit

This is the second injury that Anthony has been dealing with throughout the early season, as he revealed that he was also dealing with left knee soreness. Both injuries combined are a concern, and they could hold him back and out of some games. There is no denying that his production has been down, and injury issues could very well be what have been forcing those numbers down.

All of that being said, it’s a very positive sign that Anthony flew to Dallas with his team. There is a chance that he could play and that means that he isn’t suffering from a severe case of back spasms. They’re never something to play with, but the Knicks and Anthony may have dodged a bullet if he’s truly feeling well enough already to consider playing.
