Houston Rockets: Team Introduces New Alternate Jerseys

I hope you’re a fan of the new fad sweeping the NBA. By that, I’m talking about the sleeved jerseys that a lot of teams have taken up using as alternate jerseys. The Houston Rockets will not be using the same ones from last season, as the team unveiled a new, special edition jersey. The Rockets will now don a red, sleeved jersey with the word “Rockets” on the front, spelled out in Mandarin (火箭). Here are the new jerseys (via ClutchFans):

The new jerseys will be used for the Lunar New Year, which falls on Feb. 19. Houston will wear the jerseys on the 21st, 23rd and 25th of February against the Toronto Raptors, Minnesota Timberwolves and Los Angeles Clippers, respectively.

I’m not a big fan of the sleeved trend that is sweeping the league. In fact, I’m against the movement for various reasons. For one, more than a few shooters have complained that it messes with their shooting motions, including LeBron James. The numbers show a bit of an increase in overall shooting percentages compared to the regular jerseys. However, when you couple the fact that it was an extremely small sample size with the fact that, generally, only the top NBA teams used the sleeved jerseys, you get a slightly higher percentage. And two, most of the jerseys look just plain ugly.

That hasn’t really stopped fans from buying them. If NBA commissioner Adam Silver is to be believed, the sleeved jerseys have proven to be very popular among NBA fans. This despite some players being vocal against the jerseys.

This case is a bit different. The jerseys look a lot better than a lot of last year’s sleeved jerseys. It looks sleek and the Mandarin symbols compliment it very well. It’s a very nice touch, with the Rockets changing their jerseys to reach out to the very large NBA fan base in China, as well as the sizable Chinese community in Houston.
