Golden State Warriors: Curry Brothers Reunited

Apparently, one Curry just isn’t enough for the Golden State Warriors.

The Warriors signed undrafted former Duke guard Seth Curry (brother of star guard Stephen Curry) to a non-guaranteed contract Friday. He will compete for a roster spot in training camp, which starts in late September. Curry, 23, was not selected in either round of the 2013 NBA draft. He spent the last three years playing under Mike Krzyzewski at Duke, where he posted combined averages of 13.2 points and two assists per game on 43.9 percent shooting (42 percent from long range). Like his older brother, Seth is also revered for his scoring abilities, specifically from beyond the arc. In his final collegiate season, he notched 17.5 points per contest and connected on 43.8 percent of his deep balls.

Curry is an undersized 2 guard (6’3”) who did not take part in draft workouts or Summer League due to a shin injury. What he can do is what his brother also does so well — Seth Curry can shoot, hitting 44 percent of his 3s at Duke his senior season. The questions about him start with his size and the fact he lacks the length or explosive athleticism to compensate for it. He doesn’t really create his own shot on offense and his ability to defend other 2 guards (or points) at the NBA level is in doubt. For the younger Curry to carve out a roster spot, let alone a steady role with the Warriors, he will certainly need to play solid defense in addition to showcasing his shooting touch. Neither Curry is known for their defensive prowess, but Steph readily admitted that Seth is considered the more talented of the two on that end of the floor.

The Warriors currently have 12 guaranteed contracts for next season plus Kent Bazemore, whose deal is partially guaranteed. leaving two open roster spots entering camp. The good news: Golden State is roughly $5 million below the luxury tax line and can fill out their open roster spots by adding minimum contracts without additional penalty if they so choose. The bad news: There aren’t many minutes in the backcourt available, as last year’s starters, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, both averaged 35-plus minutes per night while 2013 first-round pick Nemanja Nedovic, free-agent acquisition Toney Douglas and Bazemore provide depth off the bench.

Former NBA player Dell Curry is father to both Stephen and Seth. Dell Curry retired in 2002 after a 17-season career in which he averaged 11.7 points and shot 40.2 percent from deep.[slider_pro id=”10″]
