Coming off the franchise’s first post-season birth and with new majority owner Michael Jordan in tow, this could have been an exciting draft for the Charlotte Bobcats. However, they have no picks, and as of now, may not participate. Let’s take a look at them anyway:
Returning Players– Tyson Chandler (C); Boris Diaw (SF); Gerald Wallace (SF); Stephen Jackson (SG); Nazr Mohammed (C); DeSagana Diop (C); DJ Augustin (PG); Gerald Henderson (SG); Alexis Ajinca (C); Tyrus Thomas (PF – Qualifying Offer)
Team Payroll (10 Players) – $59,536,980
Estimated Salary Cap – $56,000,000
Team Needs– Point guard decision (re-sign Felton?, let Augustin start?, someone new?); Quality big men
Position Needs – PG, PF, C
Picks – No picks
Analysis– Well it is tough to really write a whole lot in a NBA Draft column about a team with no picks in the NBA draft. Of course, there is always the possibility that the Bobcats trade their way back into the draft. If they do, and for reasons of this column they do, it is assumed that they will be looking to add depth at the point guard or power forward positions. If the Bobcats can find their way into the 2nd round, it is possible to find some depth at these positions. Some 2nd round point guard prospects include Sherron Collins, Armon Johnson and Mikhail Torrance. If Larry Brown has a major say in the pick, look for Collins to get a serious look if he is around. If not, Johnson would be the next best pick. If they choose to look at a big man in the 2nd round, expect to hear names such as Luke Harangody or Jarvis Varnado discussed. Tiny Gallon would be a quality pick in the 2nd round, but I have a feeling that he would not last long with Coach Brown.
If Charlotte does indeed move back into the draft before draft day, I will update this. If not, the Bobcats will be missed. Check back tomorrow for our look at the team with the #1 pick – the Washington Wizards
