Heat Replacement #7: Josh Richardson
One potential replacement candidate for Herro is already on the Heat’s roster. Josh Richardson started his career in Miami and played for the Philadelphia 76ers, Dallas Mavericks, Boston Celtics, San Antonio Spurs, and New Orleans Pelicans before signing a two-year contract to return to Miami earlier this summer.
Although the two players’ games are pretty different, Richardson appears likely to start at shooting guard next season and give the Heat shooting, some playmaking, and better defense for a fraction of the price. Herro is a better player and six years younger. But if the Heat dumps him for cheaper rotation players and picks, then Richardson would help to lessen the loss.
Additionally, if they acquire a star and make another deep run in the playoffs, Richardson’s strength on the defensive end makes it harder for opposing teams to attack the Heat. That came in handy for the Heat during the playoffs last season after Herro was ruled out, and he could be tasked with guarding the opposite team’s best guard. If Richardson can drain threes and defend, then he will give Miami plenty of options and make Herro more replaceable.
