3 targets to fortify the Golden State Warriors’ second unit: Marc Gasol

Size has been an issue for the Warriors all season, largely due to the absence of James Wiseman. The second-year big man has missed the entire season with knee issues, and although it appears he is inching closer to making his return, Golden State could bolster their frontcourt depth before the postseason. In that case, one household name that should be on their radar is Marc Gasol.

After an unsuccessful stint with the Los Angeles Lakers last season, Gasol returned overseas, and many believed that his time in the NBA was over.

However, ESPN insider Zach Lowe (subscription required) recently reported that Gasol was in touch with the Milwaukee Bucks about a deal that would have brought him back into the league (before they acquired Serge Ibaka). If Gasol remains interested in pursuing an NBA return, the Warriors should be a potential suitor.

There is some previous interest in Gasol on Golden State’s end, as The Athletic’s Anthony Slater (subscription required) reported that the big man nearly signed with the team previously.

While his stint with the Lakers was not the greatest, Gasol proved that he could still play by averaging a respectable 5.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.1 blocked shots per game.

The 7-footer also shot 41 percent from behind the arc on 2.3 attempts per contest, meaning he could help in bumping up Golden State’s second unit three-point shooting percentage.

As the Warriors look to add some size, depth, shooting, and experience, a savvy veteran like Gasol could be their answer. If their previous interest in Gasol is still lingering, the Warriors should kick the tires on bringing the former Defensive Player of the Year aboard for a playoff run.
