San Antonio Spurs offseason roster move No. 1: Re-sign DeMar DeRozan

DeMar DeRozan came over in the Kawhi Leonard trade along with Jakob Poeltl. DeRozan has spent the last three seasons with the Spurs and has only participated in playoff basketball in his first season with the franchise, which would not make him overly happy.

DeRozan is the undoubted clutch player for the Spurs at the moment. He is not the most experienced player on the team but is responsible for most of the big shots at the end of the game. Patty Mills who is also a great clutch shooter does not have the defense required for the big moments.

This is a key for the Spurs, as they have their younger unit on the floor at the end of games as they have the better defense of the squad and Popovich wants to give them this time to grow. At 31 years of age, DeRozan is the veteran to help guide and support these younger guys in these moments.

He has expanded his offensive game to become the main playmaker for the team as well, collecting a career-high 6.9 assists. The thing is that due to DeRozan’s play, he is going to cost the Spurs a lot if he even decides to come back.

They can afford it with their cap space situation but the question is, will DeRozan want to return given that they are not performing. A sign and trade may be the best they can get which could help them get back to being a playoff team.
