Cleveland Cavaliers offseason move No. 5: Trade Kevin Love

Love was a really important player in the year the Cleveland Cavaliers won their championship. Obviously, both LeBron James and Kyrie Irving were the stars of the team but Love was able to space the floor with his shooting and collect rebounds.

Now that he is the last of that big three left on the team, his massive contract that he signed has been a millstone around the franchise’s neck. In 2018-19 he was paid $24 million to only play 22 games. Then in 2019-20, he was paid $29 million to only play in 56 games.

Last season he was paid $31.3 million to play in just 25 games. This season he is going to be paid another 31.3 million but as it is the second last season of his deal, other teams may be willing to take on the baggage that is his contract. The final year of his deal is worth $28.9 million.

It is likely that the Cavaliers are going to have to trade with a team like the OKC Thunder, the Houston Rockets, or the Orlando Magic who are all trying to rebuild their franchises. The deals may be a little one-sided but getting the salary off their books would be well worth it.

This will have a bearing on whether they can extend Collin Sexton as he will be looking for good money in his next contract. Trade Love and Sexton’s contract in the 2022-23 season could look great.
