Cleveland Cavaliers offseason move No. 3: Sign a productive backup point guard

The Cavaliers need to sign a Dellavedova type player, a good locker room presence who can mentor the young backcourt. However, they also need this player to produce on the court. If the Cavaliers do move on from Dellavedova, they then only have Garland as their only true point guard.

There are a large number of quality point guards available in free agency, so if the Cavaliers wanted to take a risk they could sign Spencer Dinwiddie whose offense while playing for the Brooklyn Nets was unexpected. He does have the issue of returning from injury and may not be the same player.

Lonzo Ball did not sign an extension with the New Orleans Pelicans last offseason so is a restricted free agent this summer. He is a tremendous playmaker who is of the right age for this current rebuild. While he may not be a veteran, he is a quality player who could help the franchise.

There are a large number of free-agent point guards who have three and four years of experience. To help their defense, the Cavaliers could sign Frank Ntikilina who has struggled to get court time with the New York Knicks. Another good option is the intensity of TJ McConnell who could help on both ends of the court.
