Final Verdict

With so much uncertainty surrounding the draft and next season as a whole, it isn’t easy to assess if the Spurs will be buyers or sellers come draft night. If it were to come to fruition, this trade would positively impact all parties involved.

San Antonio will remove $27.74 million from the books following a season with serious financial ramifications due to the ongoing pandemic. While also acquiring a potential long term building block at a much lower price.

The Hawks will now have a formidable starting lineup to make some noise in the East next season. DeRozan is exactly the type of player that the Hawks need. Someone who can create his own shot and make an impact on both ends of the floor.

DeRozan is the biggest winner here. The Hawks aren’t a decorated franchise like the Spurs, but he will have a better shot at playing in the post-season next year, playing Atlanta than in San Antonio.

The best part about this for Derozan is he won’t have to worry about being stymied by LeBron James in the playoffs again unless it’s in the finals.

The San Antonio Spurs will likely want more than just the 6th pick to complete this trade. Maybe they ask for Bruno Fernando or Kevin Huerter as well, but as of now, this is at least a scenario both teams should be considering.
