Cleveland Cavaliers: 5 roster moves they must make in the coming offseason
1. Have Andre Drummond opt in
When the Cleveland Cavaliers won the Andre Drummond sweepstakes, they would have liked the rest of the season to assess how he would fit with the team. Unfortunately, Drummond only played eight games of a possible 13 before COVID-19 stopped the league in its tracks.
Fortunately for the Cavaliers, Drummond did his usual things when he played. He averaged 17.5 points, 11.1 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.4 blocks in 28.1 minutes per game. He even shot the ball at 52.2 percent from the field.
Of the eight games he played, the Cavaliers won four of them. To put it simply, Drummond makes them better when he is in the middle. He did miss five games through injury and the Cavaliers went 2-3 in that time.
Drummond is an upgrade at center for the Cavaliers. He is a better rim protector than anyone else on the roster and is able to organize the defense. Having played seven years in the league, he has enough experience to help guide some of the younger players.
Drummond’s contract is sizable, he will cost the Cavaliers $28.7 million for next season. The Cavaliers would be smart to pay that, waiting for the 2021 free agent class where they should have a heap more cap space to pay for two stars.
