3. Sneaky depth

It would be a stretch to say that the Magic boast real depth these days. Especially when compared to the Clippers and Nuggets of the world. But compared to previous seasons, and indeed the worst stretches of that horrible rebuild, the depth that they have now is actually somewhat underrated.

James Ennis III has looked really solid in scrimmage play, starting games and knocking down some shots. Defensively he is capable of making a difference too, and it is somewhat ironic that he has stepped into the role that was supposed to be created for Al-Farouq Aminu and has done well to take his chance.

Aminu is still out with a torn meniscus, and when he returns he will be another nice two-way player to add to the rotation. He could yet be used in a trade as well. Mohamed Bamba put on some serious muscle during the time away, and between himself and Khem Birch the backup center spot is in good hands when Nikola Vucevic goes to the bench.

Michael Carter-Williams is another who has looked really good in the time he has played. He has played with aggression and enthusiasm that, if he can carry over to the seeding games, will guarantee him some minutes. Carter-Williams has always been a favorite of coach Clifford, going back to their Charlotte Hornets days together, and he seems to get the best out of him.

He had 16 points in the opening game loss to the Clippers, and his shooting stroke has looked smoother than in the past too, although at this stage it is unclear if that will continue. Wesley Iwundu is another who continues to grow into a viable option off the bench to defend at a high level and knock down a couple of shots when called upon.

Even Gary Clark, who it has to be said can usually be found some way down the bench, had a night versus the Nuggets, leading the team with 17 points. It is not the depth of a contender, but the bubble is showing us that the Magic are recruiting the right players throughout the roster.
