2012 NBA Redraft: How wrong we were in real time

#17 Pick: Dion Waiters (Originally: Tyler Zeller)
This is the first draft night trade that affects the picks are making here as Dallas traded this pick and Kelenna Azubuike to the Cavaliers in exchange for the 24th, 33rd and 34th pick in this draft. We will discuss Dallas later but for now, we look at Cleveland’s second pick in this draft. Since we had them taking Andre Drummond earlier there is no reason to take a second center this time.
Honestly, I do not feel great about going with Dion Waiters for the Cavaliers but when the other prospects in this range are big men it makes it tough given the roster in the state we left them in earlier it only makes sense.
If nothing else Waiters is a scorer, averaging double-figure scoring in almost every season of his career. His ego was always his biggest issue but hopefully going this much later in the draft this could put a check on that. Someone with the nickname Kobe Wade seems unlikely to possibly have his ego checked in any way but one can dream.
Waiters has potential and if he is ever able to get out of his own way. If he is ever able to do so he could be an impressive bench scorer for a playoff team. Only time will tell.
