Storyline No. 1: Contracts ending

The Minnesota Timberwolves have five players on expiring contracts this season in Jeff Teague, Noah Vonleh, Shabazz Napier, Treveon Graham and Tyrone Wallace.

Last season, the Timberwolves were staring down the long barrel of loads of their key players sitting on expiring contracts. Players like Taj Gibson, Tyus Jones, and Derrick Rose were all on the final year of their contracts and are now no longer on the team.

For the next two seasons, Minnesota won’t be looking at a long list of potential free agents. This season, Jeff Teague is on the final year of his contract, as well as a lot of the additions made over the summer. However, it still stands to be seen how effective all of this players will be on the team this year. Should they not work out, none of these names are irreplaceable.

The Timberwolves will need to make a decision on Okogie’s third-year option before the start of the regular season. In the extremely unlikely event Minnesota chooses not to exercise it, Okogie would join the list of expiring deals.

The only expiring contract on the horizon in 2021 belongs to Keita Bates-Diop. It’s likely that Minnesota will also make sure to re-sign Bates-Diop, and so for the first time in a few years this Timberwolves roster looks like it may stay stable for the foreseeable future.
