LA Clippers: Complete grades for the 2019 NBA offseason
By Paul Headley
Re-signed JaMychal Green
Re-signing JaMychal Green for just under $10 million over the next two years ($9,772,350 to be exact) was a solid move to shore up depth.
Green has been a dependable shooter from deep over the last two seasons (37.7 percent on 2.3 attempts per game). Green has a fairly slow release and he’s unlikely to be confused for Brook Lopez, but he’s a competent enough shooter to punish being left open.
Per Basketball-Reference, Green was one of only 14 players 6-foot-9 or taller to shoot at least 2.2 3s per-game at 37 percent or better. His true shooting percentage (68.7 percent) is robust for a low-usage big taking a decent amount of perimeter shots.
Some of Green’s advanced numbers are alarmingly terrible (he’s 86th among 92 ranked power forwards in ESPN’s Real Plus-Minus stat for example), but he’ll be expected to perform a pretty limited role next season.
Paul George, Kawhi Leonard and Maurice Harkless will take the majority of available minutes at the forward spots
Green is only 29 years old, so he’s unlikely to decline too dramatically over the duration of the contract. As long as he can hit shots, rebound and not get too exploited on defense, it’s a fine move.
