2019 NBA free agency: 5 potential landing spots for Derrick Rose
1. Golden State Warriors
As crazy as it may sound, the Golden State Warriors might actually lack offensive firepower for the coming season. Even if both Klay Thompson and Kevin Durant were to re-sign this summer, only the former has a chance of stepping foot on a court, and that wouldn’t likely be until after the All-Star break.
Even before the two All-Stars suffered devastating injuries, Golden State wasn’t exactly loaded off the pine, ranking 29th in scoring and 20th in assists. Shaun Livingston and Andre Iguodala have been instrumental in three championships, but both are better served as smaller pieces to a larger puzzle.
Down two starters, what was already a thin bench has gotten even worse. In what is sure to be a physically taxing season for Stephen Curry as the only legitimate offensive weapon, Rose could serve well as instant offense off the bench.
Steve Kerr has done a phenomenal job as head coach in creating a system predicated on ball movement. It takes the ball out of any one player’s hands and keeps defenses guessing. Normally at his best with just a single defender in front of him and a fresh shot clock, maybe it could do Rose some good to have looks manifest for him in a less tiring way.
The NBA world may no longer view the Warriors as legitimate championship contenders, but there’s no way that feeling is mutual within the team. They’re going to come out looking to prove the doubters wrong, and Rose could have the chance to play a large part in all of that.
He’d get meaningful minutes on one of the premier teams in the league. Maybe Klay comes back close to 100 percent, and all of a sudden Rose is contributing in pressure-filled postseason battles. After years of playing in the shadows, thriving on a team like the Dubs would do wonders for his on-court image. And who knows, he may even get a championship ring when it’s all said and done.
