7. Lou Williams comes up clutch against Milwaukee

On Nov. 10, the Clippers had welcomed in the Milwaukee Bucks to town for an early season Saturday afternoon matinee at the Staples Center. It would be a battle between two teams that would go on to vastly outplay preseason expectations, although, at that point in time, such wasn’t necessarily the case.

Milwaukee was doing just fine, posting a record of 9-2 coming off a double-digit road victory against the Golden State Warriors. The Clippers were treading above water at 6-5 and had yet to find their footing as a collective unit.

The game would head into overtime with the ball in the hands of Lou Williams and the chance to win the game for L.A. Sweet Lou may be small in stature, but he’s never let it affect how he approaches the game. He’s developed a reputation as one of the scariest players with the game on the line because of that, one the Bucks became all too familiar with in the final seconds.

Williams managed to turn the corner on Eric Bledsoe on the right wing. There were less than five seconds on the clock that left no room for a backup plan, forcing a wild floater over the outstretched arm of seven-foot Brook Lopez. Lou went crashing into the stanchion as the ball dropped through the net, essentially sealing what would be a 128-126 victory with just 0.3 seconds remaining on the game clock.

That game wound up meaning so much more than a single W in the standings. L.A. would go on to win eight of its next nine games to put its record at 15-6. The rest is history. The Clippers continued their play en route to the 2019 NBA Playoffs, where’d they’d take Golden State to six games before suffering defeat.

The turning point of it all for L.A.? The prayer answered by the basketball gods from a player whose legend only continued to grow.
