Final grade

Despite its uninspiring finish, this season was an overall success for Griffin and the Pistons. He reclaimed his spot among the NBA’s top players with his first All-Star appearance since 2014, stayed relatively healthy and led the Pistons back to the playoffs for the first time in three seasons.

Many had doubted his ability to return to his superstar form. The consistent injuries he suffered combined with the ever-expanding style of the NBA was supposed to leave him in the dust. Instead, Griffin evolved and had arguably the greatest season of his career.

The foundation for the franchise looks good with Griffin and Drummond on the court and Casey on the bench. There are a couple of promising youngsters in Kennard and Brown, and some interesting projects in Thon Maker and Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk.

Assuming Griffin makes a full recovery from his offseason knee surgery, and if the front office makes some smart additions to the roster, next season should be even better for a guy clearly not done just yet.
