Phoenix Suns: 5 trade possibilities for Troy Daniels
2. Detroit Pistons
Though they’ve lost 18 of their last 25 games to fall to 20-25, the Detroit Pistons are still pushing for their second postseason appearance in the last nine years. They’re still only two games out of the 8-seed in the East, and if they can address their glaring weakness at the trade deadline, they should be able to ride Blake Griffin, Andre Drummond and improved floor-spacing to a postseason berth.
That aforementioned flaw? Any semblance of 3-point shooting. The Pistons rank 29th in 3-point efficiency, making just 33.3 percent of their triples. For a team launching the seventh-most 3s per game under Dwane Casey, Detroit would love a little extra floor-spacing with a reliable long range marksman like Daniels.
To balance salaries, the Pistons would send out Henry Ellenson and Jose Calderon along with their 2019 second-rounder, since they don’t own their second round selections for 2020, 2021, 2022 or 2023. Ellenson is a 22-year-old stretch-big rapidly heading for draft bust territory after Detroit declined his team option for next season.
Calderon is a steady veteran and could be a solid mentor for De’Anthony Melton and Elie Okobo for a few months until he hits free agency this summer.
Luke Kennard, Stanley Johnson and Glenn Robinson III would all work financially as well, but Detroit wouldn’t trade one of its lone sharpshooters in Kennard for a three-month rental. The Suns don’t need another one-way wing who’s heading for free agency like Johnson, and even with a team option for 2019-20, Robinson — like Kennard and Johnson — wouldn’t come with a second round pick attached.
