Detroit Pistons: 3 takeaways after the first 20 games
1. Dwane Casey was the right choice
This offseason, there were nine coaching changes made around the NBA. Among the ones who received these head coaching nods, the best options that were available were Casey and Bucks head coach Mike Budenholzer. They went with Casey, and he has been very successful in getting this Pistons team on the right track. As was previously stated, the Pistons have improved on both ends of the floor.
When Casey started with the Toronto Raptors in 2011-12, they struggled for two years before gradually growing into a perennial Eastern Conference powerhouse. While the Pistons are better set up than that group to be successful right now, they also have quite a few pieces in place that will be around to grow with this team for a long time. Players like Bruce Brown Jr., Kennard and Khyri Thomas are set to be the team’s backcourt of the future.
Casey has shown the ability to lead a team in both good times and bad times. He has been a clear upgrade over former coach Stan Van Gundy, who hadn’t really upgraded his system to fit with the modern NBA. Casey will help develop this team for the future, and it will be exciting to see what he is able to do with more time and control over the situation. The team has played well for 20 games, and Casey will keep them moving forward this season and in the future.
