Philadelphia 76ers: Joel Embiid is early NBA MVP favorite
By Larry Mendte
2. Stephen Curry
The current league scoring leader, Stephen Curry is having an MVP season for the Golden State Warriors.
Curry is not only averaging 29.5 points per game on a team bulging with scorers, but he is shooting 51.2 percent from the field, including an insane 49.2 percent from 3-point range.
Many NBA writers are calling Curry a frontrunner and it is difficult to disagree with them. As Steve Aschburner points out on his NBA.Com blog:
"“Statistically, he’s performing like a mirror image of his 2015-16 self, when he won that award unanimously (all 131 first-place votes).”"
But the superstar point guard won the award before the team acquired Kevin Durant. Curry’s chances of winning this year are hurt by the fact that some don’t think he is the MVP of his own team.
Curry strained a muscle in his left leg in a game against the Milwaukee Bucks. Warriors head coach Steve Kerr announced that the MRI is encouraging and that Curry will only be sidelined for only a few days.
