Detroit Pistons: 3 overreactions through first 4 games
1. Blake Griffin is going to win the MVP
A healthy Griffin is a dangerous player. Throughout the majority of his career, he has just needed to be healthy to be in the conversation of the NBA’s best players. In 2013-14, when he played 80 games, he finished third in MVP voting.
Through four games, he’s averaging an impressive 33.8 points, 11.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game. His shooting slash line of .557/.652/.667 might be the best part about all of it — well, other than his 50-point performance against the Sixers.
Griffin is second in the NBA in points per game, but it’s unlikely that he is able to maintain this high level of efficiency and scoring moving forward. Coach Casey likely has a plan this season to manage Griffin’s minutes to preserve him somewhat over the course of the year. He has been the team’s leading force on the offensive end, and they will need him to be that over the course of the year.
While Casey could allow Griffin to play a high number of minutes during the regular season, that could do more harm than good near the playoffs. This team looks like it’s going to live and die by the offense that he provides, which is a good and bad thing. Blake Griffin is great offensively, but he can’t carry the team’s full load.
