NBA: Ranking every team’s best player in 2018-19
26. Orlando Magic: Aaron Gordon, PF
Aaron Gordon has been one of basketball’s best athletes since high school, impressing fans from the McDonald’s All-American Game all the way to the present with his high-flying dunks and feats of athleticism. Last season he added a strong outside shot, which, if it’s consistent, will help him become a star for the Orlando Magic.
Yet team context matters as well, and Gordon’s growth has been hindered by the players he has been paired with. He is often asked to slide up to play the 3, which he can do, but is not his strongest position. In drafting Mohamed Bamba a year after taking Jonathan Isaac, Gordon may again be forced to spend time at the 3.
Defensively, Gordon has all of the tools to be elite, and after re-signing with the Magic, is settled in to grow in Orlando. If he can bring consistency at both ends of the floor he could rise up this list, but for now the players ahead of him have all proven their strong play in high-leverage situations.
