3. Improve his switch defense

Defense has always been Leuer’s strong suit, but that doesn’t mean he’s a great fit for the modern NBA. His limited athleticism leaves him vulnerable at times on switches. In a league where switch defenses are all the rage, he doesn’t necessarily fit in. While his athleticism likely won’t be greatly improved, especially coming off an injury, his knowledge in Dwane Casey’s system will be important.

Smart bigs with limited athleticism can find their way onto successful teams, such as David West with the Golden State Warriors. Leuer isn’t at the same age as West, but he does have a similar play style. Both of them shoot decently in the mid-range area, do their best work on the defensive end of the floor and they’ve never been known for their athleticism. West adapted to the changing game and Leuer needs to do the same.

In a 1-4 pick-and-roll, Leuer doesn’t have to be Draymond Green against point guards, but he needs to be better than he has been thus far. Casey has shown the ability to develop bigs in the past, and he can do that with Leuer this year. Leuer is nearing the end of his prime, as he’s closing in on 30. His defense won’t be drastically better this year, but his continued improvement would be an excellent addition to the team.
