Tier 4 – The replacements

These are the back-end-of-the-roster guys that get signed because you need 15 players. They bring some value to the team, but not much more than any other NBA free agent would.

That shouldn’t be viewed as a condemnation of these guys. These players can be some of the greatest surprise/success stories. Look at T.J. McConnell, Jonathon Simmons, Lance Stephenson, Ish Smith or Spencer Dinwiddie. Sometimes guys who barely make a roster or who bounce around the league can turn into quality role players, and even occasional starters.

There’s no reason these guys can’t do that too. Canaan was a capable stand-in last year when the point guard rotation got particularly thin. Daniels is possibly the best shooter on the team. Reed showed a little something extra in Summer League.

Still, if the Suns need an extra roster spot, this is where they’re going to be making a move, either through a trade or a cut. As previously mentioned, the only reason Holmes isn’t in here too is that the trade for him was made so recently that he’s less likely to be moved again. Really, he could fit into either tier.
