After locking Joe Harris in on a two-year deal, general manager Sean Marks reached even deeper into the bargain bin and emerged with Ed Davis on a steal of a contract. It’s a bit perplexing the Portland Trail Blazers couldn’t keep him considering the price he signed for, but this is another measured, low-key win for the Brooklyn Nets.
Davis has never been a starting-caliber big, but he’s an eight-year veteran who’s lasted in the league thanks to his hustle, rebounding and steady play off the bench. He’ll bring that same effort and experience to a rebuilding Nets squad that could use some extra padding in the frontcourt.
Last year, he averaged 7.4 rebounds in just 18.9 minutes per game, which will help a Nets team that ranked 25th in rebounding percentage last year. Davis can log minutes as a small-ball 5, but he can play power forward and he won’t intrude on Jarrett Allen’s minutes. For $4.4 million, this is an understated, solid pickup.
