Detroit Pistons: 3 roster battles to watch in 2018-19
2. Starting SG
Kennard and Bullock will be locked into a heated battle for the starting backcourt spot alongside Jackson. Bullock is the veteran with much more experience, but he lacks the upside that Kennard has. Kennard’s shooting is what got him drafted, which will also be his best shot of getting himself on the floor.
Bullock toiled as an average player for multiple seasons before breaking through last year. He shot a career-best 44.5 percent from 3-point range while shooting 48.9 percent from the floor. His shooting gives the team the spacing it needs with three or four other non-shooters on the floor. He does have an additional inch of height over Kennard, and he was a slightly better defender last season.
Kennard has the higher ceiling than Bullock, while also being the more proven shooter. He has consistently shot well in high school, college and now the NBA. His ability to spot up and run off screens has him in the mold of Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors. He will be able to run all game long to wear out his defenders. 3-pointers can light up the scoreboard quick, and he has the ability to be a bright light for this team.
