1. Can now continue to attract free agents

Houston was already a popular free agency destination because reigning MVP James Harden is signed on with the team long-term. However, bringing back Chris Paul makes the Rockets even more attractive to the star-studded free agent class of 2018 and 2019.

Having Chris Paul return ensures that the Rockets will continue to compete for the right to play in the NBA Finals, a feat that has eluded them since the 1994-95 season. This could cause talented players on the free agent market to take less money to have a chance at competing for a championship alongside Paul and Harden.

Re-signing Clint Capela should absolutely be the next priority for Houston’s front office to keep the core group of players together. However, retaining Chris Paul makes pitching to free agents much easier and should allow the team to add more important pieces that will help them hopefully challenge the Golden State Warriors next season.
