5. Grayson Allen

Love him or hate him, Grayson Allen is a good basketball player.

Allen’s style of play has been talked about almost to the point of ad nauseam, along with his character, but Allen proved to be a solid player during his four years at Duke, and that should translate to the next level.

The Grizzlies finished the 2017-18 season ranked 25th in 3-point percentage, only connecting on 35.2 percent of their attempts. The team also ranked 24th in both 3-point attempts and makes per game (26.2 and 9.2 respectively), but when the team’s leader in 3-point percentage is a 30 year-old player that had been out of the league three years before coming to play for the Grizzlies, that’s bound to happen. The good news for Memphis is that when you’re that down, you can only go up.

Allen shot 37.0 percent from 3-point land this past season at Duke, but did so on 7.5 attempts per game. He was also the team’s second-leading scorer (15.5 points per game) and assist man (4.6 per game). Allen’s ball-handling skills are a work in progress, but those assist numbers show marginal improvement.

Allen will also be one of the older prospects in this year’s class at 22, but that may actually work in his favor.

As mentioned earlier, Memphis is only a season removed from a postseason berth, and with a healthy Mike Conley (and hopefully Chandler Parsons), the Grizzlies may not be looking to rebuild. Allen’s defensive limitations may cause him to fall out of the first round, but Memphis is looking for ready-made prospects, and Allen fits that bill perfectly.
