2. Joe was jinglin’

Joe Ingles finished the game with 21 points, four assists, three rebounds, and five 3-pointers made. The numbers weren’t flashy, just solid. In fact, one of his nicknames is Slow Mo Joe. The other? Jinglin’ Joe — and that certainly felt apt in Game 3.

Take the above play for example. It begins with Ingles bringing the ball up the court. Once he crosses half-court, he initiates a simple pick-and-roll with Derrick Favors, who rolls to the basket for the jam. The crowd is visibly excited about the play, but they should be excited about more plays like this in the near future.

Thunder backup point guard Raymond Felton gets caught on Favors’ screen, so Carmelo Anthony (Favors’ initial defender) is switched onto Ingles. Anthony makes a feeble attempt to put a hand in Ingles face, who quickly whips it down to Favors for the aforementioned dunk. It’s something that doesn’t happen that is the most important part of the play.

More from NBA Playoffs

Watch the end of the play again — around the 5-second mark — right before Favors goes up for the dunk.

Notice how Patrick Patterson (who was guarding Rudy Gobert on the play) comes over to try to attempt to block/defend Favors — the correct thing to do, even though Favors ended up scoring? Even if Patterson put Favors in a position where he couldn’t really get a good shot off, Favors could have dumped the ball off to Gobert for an uncontested dunk (or a foul on Patterson).

Another option would have been (assuming Favors had passed the ball to Gobert) Gobert pump faking and then kicking it out to an open shooter for 3. Or Gobert could have pump faked and laid it in for 2.

See where this is going?

When Ingles is able to initiate the offense, good things happen. Having his 3-point shooting return is just a bonus.
