NBA: 5 under-the-radar rookies that can earn a regular rotation spot
By Max Holm
3. Davon Reed – Phoenix Suns
Davon Reed was on the side of players whose names let out a “Wait, who is that?” On draft night, he wasn’t one of the sexier names, but he was a legitimate first round talent for a draft that saw plenty of flawed players go early. When many NBA teams pounced on big men projects like Justin Patton, Harry Giles and Tony Bradley, good bets to be two-way players were left idle on the board.
The Phoenix Suns appeared to be aware of this. They took Reed with the 32nd overall pick. In Reed, the Suns likely saw what those who watched him at Miami saw. Reed has tremendous size to play off the ball on the wing with a good-looking jump shot. That and his defensive tools give promise to perhaps filling a 3-and-D role. He’s not Danny Green, for now, but he’s still incredibly useful.
While Devin Booker and Eric Bledsoe will play the majority of the minutes in the backcourt, playing time opened up with the injury/rocky road for Brandon Knight. Reed can take that vacancy and make a rotation spot for himself. As long as his three-ball falls and he doesn’t get killed on defense, he’ll get a chance.
