Small Forward: Shawn Marion

Honorable mentions:  Dan MajerleDick Van Arsdale

Putting a career 33.1 percent 3-point shooter on the wing isn’t a great idea in today’s NBA, but there’s no question that Shawn Marion is the most deserving small forward for the Suns’ all-time starting five.

During his nine seasons in Phoenix, The Matrix was at his best, averaging an eye-popping 18.4 points, 10.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.9 steals and 1.4 blocks per game on more than respectable .481/.342/.824 shooting splits. He also made four All-Star games and two All-NBA appearances in that time.

Because of his athleticism, vastly underrated defense and ability to play multiple positions, Marion was one of the most well-balanced contributors on any contender during his time. In fact, there’s a very strong case for him to make the Hall of Fame one day down the road.

Hall or no Hall, Marion cemented his place in Suns lore during the 2005-06 season, when he led the team in points, rebounds, steals AND blocks while filling in for an injured Amar’e Stoudemire. He also ranks first in total win shares, second in rebounds and steals, third in blocks and fourth in points on Phoenix’s all-time leaderboards.

Defense isn’t as important in a video game like 2K, but even with a mediocre 3-point shot, there’s no question Matrix deserves the small forward spot in this team’s all-time starting five. Plus, having the firepower of Dan Majerle and Dick Van Arsdale behind him bolsters an already impressive second unit.
