NBA: 5 teams who have improved their stock over the summer
5. Philadelphia 76ers
After a very busy offseason, the Philadelphia 76ers have an opportunity at a winning record for the first time in 13 years.
Their moves started a few days before the draft when they agreed to trade the third overall pick and a future first-rounder (either the Los Angeles Lakers‘ 2018 first if it lands between 2-5 or the better of Philadelphia’s and Sacramento King‘s 2019 first round pick, unless it’s the top pick in the draft).
That trade still ensured Philadelphia walked into draft night with five total picks. However, they ended up leaving the night with four players. They traded a 2020 first and second for Anzejs Pasecniks and moved two of their second-rounders for cash considerations.
The big prize they ended up with was Markelle Fultz, the stud point guard out of the University of Washington.
The 76ers carried that momentum into free agency where they signed J.J. Redick, Amir Johnson and last year’s 26th overall pick, Furkan Korkmaz. They also waived Gerald Henderson to make room for all of their acquisitions.
All of those players might not even equal in talent compared to the planned return of Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons. As of the middle of July, both of these guys are on track to play at the beginning of the NBA season, if not shortly thereafter.
A healthy Simmons and Embiid combined with another great young player, Fultz, allows the Process to earn our trust once more. When you throw in the Redick signing, both for production and mentorship, it’s a win-win for everyone.
