Tony Allen: 1 year, $2.3 million or $3.3 million (New Orleans Pelicans)

With Solomon Hill out for 6-8 months, the New Orleans Pelicans desperately needed help on the wing. After all, Darius Miller and Jalen Jones were the only other small forwards listed on the 2017-18 roster.

By landing quite possibly the best remaining free agent, the Pellies addressed a pressing need, adding a six-time All-Defensive Team selection to the 3-spot (either for the veteran minimum at $2.3 million or the bi-annual exception at $3.3 million). Though he’s already 35 years old, Tony Allen remains a premier, versatile defender who will bring intensity and grit to this playoff-hopeful squad.

Allen’s shooting woes are well known, but last year with the Memphis Grizzlies, he put up 9.1 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game on 46 percent shooting. The Pelicans don’t need him for his offense with Anthony Davis, DeMarcus Cousins, Jrue Holiday and Rajon Rondo, but they will appreciate his defense and tenacity at a position of great need.
