It seems crazy, but there’s a very good chance Chris Paul leaves the Clippers this offseason. If that’s the case, Los Angeles will need a new starting point guard in the near future. Thankfully for them, there should be several options available during 2017 NBA free agency.

One of the more enticing players who should hit the market come July is Jeff Teague. There are a number of reasons the Clippers should be interested in Teague. The first is his age relative to Paul (he just turned 29), which is preferable. The second is his price tag, which shouldn’t come close to the max considering he played last season at $8 million.

With Los Angeles’ salary cap the way it is, the team could use a starting-caliber point guard with a reduced price tag. Especially if they plan on retaining Griffin and potentially landing LeBron James next offseason, they need to keep their financials in order. Overspending on a top point guard wouldn’t be ideal. In this situation, though, that doesn’t really matter.

Either way, Teague would be an excellent addition to this roster. While he may not be Paul, he’s got more tread left on his tires and brings similar excitement to the game. The Pacers are unlikely to dish out big bucks to retain him with Paul George on his way out, which could open the door for the Clippers to swoop in and sign him.
