Detroit Pistons: 25 Best Players To Play For The Pistons
By Phil Watson
Andre Drummond was an intriguing, but extremely raw, prospect when he left Connecticut after a freshman season during which he averaged 10.0 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.
The Detroit Pistons liked what they saw from the 6-foot-11 athlete and took him with the ninth overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft.
Used sparingly as a rookie, he still showed enough to earn second-team All-Rookie honors and cement a starting spot at center for his second season.
The climb has been steady since. Drummond was named an All-Star for the first time in 2016 and was an All-NBA selection in 2015-16, as well.
He led the NBA in rebounding last season after finishing second in both 2013-14 and 2014-15. He was also second in the league in field-goal percentage in 2013-14 and was the leading offensive rebounder in the NBA each of the last three seasons.
In 2015-16, he averaged 16.2 points, 14.8 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.4 blocks in 32.9 minutes per game, shooting .521/2-for-6/.355. The free-throw percentage was the lowest in NBA history, breaking a mark set by Wilt Chamberlain in 1967-68.
But the Pistons went all-in on Drummond on July 15, 2016, signing the restricted free agent to a five-year, $127.2 million deal that includes a player option for 2020-21 and an 8 percent trade kicker clause.
In four seasons in Detroit, Drummond has averaged 13.2 points, 12.6 rebounds, 1.6 blocks and 1.2 steals in 29.7 minutes per game on .553/3-for-12/.380 shooting.
