NBA Free Agency 2016: Top 5 Most Overpaid Players
No. 2: Ian Mahinmi — 4 Years, $64 Million
It was tough to decide who was more overpaid between Mahinmi and Mozgov. Both are centers, both got four-year, $64 million contracts (per Tim Bontemps of the Washington post), and both seem equally undeserving of said contracts.
But Mahinmi’s numbers exceed Mozgov’s just a tad in terms of mediocrity.
To be fair, that wasn’t the case last season. Mahinmi was actually solid in his 25.6 minutes per game, averaging 9.3 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks.
But his career averages are likely more indicative of what to expect out of him going forward, and those numbers do not scream $64 million. His career averages are a measly 5.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 0.7 blocks per game.
Can he take the kind of production he put forth in 2015-16 and continue it with the Washington Wizards next season? Maybe. But like Mozgov, $16 million per year is a big commitment for a guy who hasn’t shown he can maintain this kind of production.
Then you factor in that Mahinmi won’t even be a starter with Marcin Gortat still in the fold and this contract just becomes all sorts of perplexing.
Mahinmi’s previous contract of $4 million per year was much more appropriate given his numbers. There’s no doubt he’s among the most overpaid players in the 2016 offseason.
