NBA Orlando Summer League: Random Thoughts, Day 2
New York Knicks squad
Well … at least it’s the Summer League.
The Knicks squad looks just as you’d expect a young, unproven squad with no 2016 draft picks to look: discombobulated, unsure, and with questionable effort.
The players you thought would break out–namely, second-year men J.P. Tokoto (formerly of the Oklahoma City Blue D-League team) and Cleanthony Early–didn’t.
No one else stepped up to give any surprises. Not even Marshall Plumlee, in his league debut.
(Yes, there’s another Plumlee in the league, by way of Duke University, of course.)
Marshall will put his Army career on hold as he tries to join his older brothers Mason (Portland Trail Blazers) and Miles (Milwaukee Bucks) in the league when the season opens in October.
That’s a nice human interest story but when it comes to actual play, the Knicks squad looks terrible.
Knicks head coach Jeff Hornacek has his work cut out for him.
Then again, the way the Knicks squad is playing in Orlando, Hornacek doesn’t have to invite any of them to training camp, and the players signed with the team in some fashion can be shipped to D-League (again, in the case of Tokoto).
To be fair, the Knicks squad has only played two games so far (next game: Tuesday, July 5, against the Clippers squad); some teams work the kinks out faster than others, so it may very well be that this squad gets it together before Orlando Summer League play ends on Friday.
But I’m not holding my breath.
