The word, “Polarizing,” is often overused in the sports world. If any NBA player embodies the term on the court, however, it’s Detroit Pistons center and deserving first-time All-Star Andre Drummond.
Drummond is one of the most dominant players in the NBA, but he also has a weakness that cripples the momentum both he and his team attempt to establish.
Drummond’s numbers speak for themselves: 17.3 points, 15.0 rebounds, 5.2 offensive boards, 1.6 steals, and 1.5 blocks are all incredible marks individually, let alone together. He’s the most dominant rebounder in the NBA, and has made tremendous fundamental strides as a scorer.
Early in his development at 22 years old, Drummond is far better than most players become at any age.
Unfortunately, he’s shooting 35.1 percent from the free throw line. Amongst players who averaged at least 5.0 free throw attempts per game, Drummond is on pace to have the worst single-season shooting mark in NBA history.
It shouldn’t matter enough to alter an outcome, but with Drummond attempting 7.7 free throws per game, it clearly does.
