Journeyman Jason

Jason Smith isn’t a bad signing in and of itself. Last season in New York, he averaged 8.0 points and 4.0 rebounds in 21.8 minutes per game while shooting 35.7 percent from three-point territory. He’s a serviceable backup stretch-4, though at age 29, he’s probably about as good as he’s ever going to be.

That being said, the Magic basically swapped a younger player with much more upside in O’Quinn for Journeyman Jason, who might be able to stretch the floor better but really doesn’t have as much value overall.

Again, this isn’t a bad move, but going from O’Quinn — especially on a more than reasonable deal like the four-year, $16 million contract he signed with the Knicks — to Smith’s one-year, $4.3 million deal is a slight downgrade in the long-term.
