The Sacramento Kings have bolstered their depth on the perimeter with the addition of veteran swingman Arron Afflalo.

Arron Afflalo‘s time in New York proved to be disappointing. While he served most of the season in a starting role, he did not click with Kurt Rambis after the dismissal of Derek Fisher and was relegated to a bench role.

The Sacramento Kings are hoping that a change of scenery will breathe new life into the 30-year-old shooting guard, who averaged 12.8 points and 2.0 assists per game last season while shooting 44.3 percent from the floor and 38.2 percent from behind the arc.

Afflalo had previously indicated that he still believed that he could be a starter in the NBA and that belief would factor into his decision in free agency.

It appears as though he found a situation where that can happen.

Afflalo and the Kings have agreed to a two-year contract for $25 million. The deal was first reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical:

What this means for the future of Ben McLemore is still up in the air. The Kings young shooting guard had been in the center of trade rumors at the deadline last season, but they ultimately opted to keep him after not receiving any offers that they felt were sufficient.

The two year deal is a solid one for the Kings, who have struggled to add valuable veterans to their team for some time now.

Even if they chose to send McLemore to the bench for Afflalo, it gives him a solid veteran to study under and provides them with the consistent floor spacing that they’ve lacked.

The other option would be to shop

Rudy Gay

, who is entering the second year of his three-year, $40 million contract extension. His third year is a player option, one which he will likely opt out of and become a free agent, given the money that is currently being handed out.

At just more than $13 million this season, he is a bargain for his production and could net the Kings a solid return for the future.

Such a move could open up playing time for both Afflalo and McLemore, although it would leave the Kings lacking size on the wing as both players are 6-foot-5.

Even if Afflalo regresses, as he will turn 31 prior to the beginning of next season, at $12.5 million per season there isn’t a lot of risk for a Kings team that isn’t at the point where every deal carries a dramatic opportunity cost or could impact their ability to contend.

Pair Afflalo with the newly signed Matt Barnes and the Kings can comfortably say that they added some veterans that possess toughness, defense and experience, something that has been scarce in Sacramento.

While this move isn’t likely to get the Kings over the hump and into the playoffs, it’s a solid, low-risk move that gives them some flexibility moving forward. Reasonable moves have not been the norm in Sacramento, so maybe this is a sign of good things to come in their future.
