Last season, the Dallas Mavericks surprised us.

It felt like after the failure to get DeAndre Jordan, Mark Cuban cobbled together a makeshift roster without a proper center. Wow, did they surprise NBA fans. I then remembered tonever count a team with Dirk Nowitzki out; he is just that good.

He and his supporting cast made it to the playoffs, before being knocked out by the Oklahoma City Thunder in five games.

Last summer was the off season from a bad place for the Dallas Mavericks. They did an in-principle deal with Jordan which was good until the final hour and he backed out, preferring to stay with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Dallas was then backed into a max deal with Wesley Matthews, who was coming off an Achilles injury and no one was sure how well he was going to play. They also had no real center to speak of.

The Mavericks made it to sixth place behind Nowitzki’s 18.3 points per game and Deron Williams‘ 14.1 points and 5.8 assists. The rest of the Mavericks all contributed quite evenly across the board, putting in a real team effort.

This off season the Mavericks face a number of key decisions, not least of all, of what to do with their aging yet ageless superstar Nowitzki.

Dallas only had one pick in the 2016 NBA draft, No. 46, deep into the second round. As is the Dallas way since they drafted Jim Jackson all those years ago, they drafted well. A.J Hammons is a 7-foot-0 center from Purdue.

They just need to get him into NBA shape and they will have gotten a steal so late in the draft.

That being said, here are five roster moves the Dallas Mavericks need to make.
