In any professional sports league, the offseason provides some of the most anticipated times of the calendar year because it is a chance for fans to see teams take on a new form by signing free agents.

There are the under-the-radar signings of role players who sign for maybe a year or two and for cheap, and then there are the blockbuster deals that go to players that can potentially raise a team’s chances of becoming championship contenders.

Unless the player is a proven superstar in the league, there is a ton of risk that comes along with signing a player to a bigger contract. Lack of chemistry, injuries, and deterioration of skill are all risks that teams need to consider before inking a new deal with their next piece to a championship puzzle.

Unfortunately, some players don’t rise to the occasion and expectations that come along with their respective contracts. Situations such as these can make the front office of a team look as if they lack intelligence, or that they were desperate to make a splash in the free agency period.

The summer of 2015 was another hectic summer for general managers and NBA teams trying to find the best deals. With the salary cap set to rise next summer, it had an effect on the offers that some average or below-average players were getting.

For instance, when Cory Joseph signed a four-year, $30 million contract with the Toronto Raptors, it was a shocking number for a backup point guard that played spotty minutes on the San Antonio Spurs. But after considering the cap for next summer, that deal actually isn’t as big as it seems.

Joseph is a different story though, because he is actually playing pretty well for the Toronto Raptors. There have been a number of players that signed new deals last summer and have been extremely disappointing.

Let’s take a look at the top five worst free agent signings of 2015.
