For one of the NBA’s all-time great teammates, savviest assisters and most selfless superstars, Steve Nash finally got the chance to enjoy a night that was all about him. Yet even as he soaked in his induction into the Phoenix Suns Ring of Honor Friday night, those same humble qualities that made him so revered couldn’t help but shine through.

During halftime of the Suns’ second home game against the Portland Trail Blazers — a spectacle that lasted about 40 minutes when all was said and done — Nash became the 14th member of the prestigious Ring of Honor. Yet even as he rambled on for 11 and a half minutes that were uninterrupted, save for the soldout crowd’s roars of approval, Nash never once made the night about himself.

There were plenty who tried. Al McCoy, legendary broadcaster and “voice of the Suns,” accurately praised Nash as “the heart and soul of what Suns basketball is all about.”

Former Suns head coach Mike D’Antoni, who was in attendance, echoed what everyone in Phoenix had subconsciously thought at one point or another, addressing Nash’s parents with, “I don’t know how they met, but boy I’m glad you guys got together.”

But on a night that tried to accomplish the impossible of describing what Steve Nash meant to the city of Phoenix, there were ultimately very few words that could articulate it as succinctly as Nash’s actions themselves.
