The NBA season started last night for the Los Angeles Clippers and Sacramento Kings in Sleep Train Arena and the Clippers did just enough to avoid adding a number to the loss column in a 111-104 victory.

The Clippers were up by double-digits for most of the game before a 4th quarter comeback aided by the Kings catching fire from deep added some dramatic flair to the action. Clipper fans could be forgiven if they were having deja-vu of last year’s meltdown against the Houston Rockets in the playoffs. The Clippers led by 15 in the second half but that lead shrunk and disappeared with the Kings taking the lead deep into the 4th quarter. The Clippers showed resolve and mental toughness to recover from suffering the same fate they did last season and gutted out the win.

After the first game of the season, it’s easy to overreact to outlier performances that just happened to come on opening night. C.J. McCollum will not average 37 points per game this season. Ricky Rubio will not average 25 points and 14 assists. However, the great performances on opening night might be foreshadowing both players having the best seasons of their young careers.

Let’s take a look at five things that happened in the first game of the season and what they could mean going forward.
